Waynesboro Police Department partners with Ring for new app

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) — The Waynesboro Police Department is hoping some new technology will help them solve more crime in the city.

People can now download the Neighbors app from Ring, and use it to report suspicious activity to police.

The police department says it's relatively new technology to them, but there are a lot of people who already have Ring cameras in Waynesboro.

Police say you can still use the app, even if you don't have Ring, since it works with other home cameras as well.

Sgt. Fred Smith says when it comes to solving crime, having video is very important and makes their jobs easier.

"There's so many clues that an eye-witness might leave out, that a trained police officer who watches the video, picks out different characteristics of said crime," Smith said.

Smith says the app also allows them to talk with people in real-time, and he says that will help them solve crimes and keep people safe.

If you'd like to download the app, police say you can text "StaySafe" to 555888 on your smartphone, or you can find the app in the app store. It's available for iPhones and Androids. You can also find a download link at download.ring.com/neighbors.
