Waynesboro school temporarily locked down due to erroneous report

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) — On Wednesday morning, WHSV received reports from concerned parents about a lockdown at Waynesboro High School and an unexpectedly large police presence.

People reported seeing about nine police vehicles in front of the school and receiving messages from students about a lockdown.

According to the Waynesboro Police Department, the lockdown was due to an unidentified person at the school — but that person turned out to be a student.

Police say the school was placed on a modified lockdown in the morning after someone reported a possible unidentified person, and a search of the school was carried out.

That's standard protocol with unidentified individuals in a school building, out of an abundance of caution.

The search determined the person who had been reported as "unidentified" was, in fact, a student of the school, and the lockdown was lifted.

Normal functions have been restored at the school.
