Valley teacher charged in attack of Charlottesville rally organizer

WHSV has confirmed Phoebe Stevens, who was arrested on a charge of assaulting an organizer of the Aug. 12 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, was a teacher with Augusta County Public Schools.

An online school directory listed Stevens as a French teacher at Wilson Memorial High School.

When asked for further comment about Stevens' current status at the school, a school administrator said she could not comment on personnel matters.

Stevens has a court hearing scheduled in November. She turned herself in to police last week.

She is one of four people arrested on charges for attacking Jason Kessler during his press conference the day after the "Unite the Right" rally that resulted in three deaths.

A fourth person has been arrested on a charge of assaulting an organizer of the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

Police said Wednesday that 35-year-old Phoebe LaFroy Stevens turned herself in on Tuesday. Two other men were arrested over the weekend on charges of assaulting Unite the Right organizer Jason Kessler, who was mobbed after he tried to hold a news conference the day after violence erupted in Charlottesville.

Another man was accused of spitting on Kessler and immediately charged with misdemeanor assault.

Charlottesville police Lt. Steve Upman said in an email that at least 14 people have been arrested in connection to the rallies and protests that weekend. The charges range from second-degree murder to malicious wounding to failure to disperse in a riot.
