As if there wasn't enough things to celebrate this Independence Day, add the chance of winning thousands of dollars to the list!
It's the moment so many have be waiting for: The Friendly City Fortune.
The raffle ticket numbers were called every five minutes for four hours today offering more than $250,000 in cash and prizes.
Lauren Huber is the director of resources with Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance. She said today was all about the celebration and that the prizes won't be handed out until tomorrow.
Her staff plans to make call after call on July 5th to coordinate times for the winners to stop by and claim their prizes.
Huber said folks will have to pay taxes on cash and prizes, but not for the cars.
"The car dealerships have actually been really wonderful and they have rolled the taxes and fees into the amount so for the large vehicles are already going to be paid for," said Huber.
If you'd rather take the money, you can also trade in your prize for 50 percent of its cash value.
Huber said the participation from the community will help to make downtown an even better place to be. She said everyone should feel like a winner, whether they left with a golden ticket or not.
"The funds that's going to be raised from this event is going right back into your community so Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is really excited to be able to have a strategic plan going forward, get ideas from the community and come up with some really exciting ways to better downtown for everybody," said Huber.
