Brett Tharp: WHSV Student Athlete of the Week, Feb. 15

BAKER, Wv. (WHSV) -- East Hardy High School football coach Chad Williams did not need a crystal ball to call it right about Brett Tharp.

"One thing with Brett you could identify even at a young age, that he was gonna be a special talent," said Williams.

Remembering him as the team's second grade ball boy, Williams knew the sidelines could not hold him back for long.

"It's been a pleasure watching him grow up into what he's turned into," he said.

That's a force to be reckoned with.

"Every game I play, I try to win. I hate losing," Tharp said.

Tharp is passionate about three sports, and was part of the first East Hardy football team to play in a West Virginia state championship game.

"I never saw Brett step onto a football field where he didn't think in his head that he was the best player out there, and I think he stepped out there with a chip on his shoulder to show everybody he was the best one," said Williams.

Tharp is not only a triple sport athlete, but a triple completer in East Hardy's agriculture program.

"You gotta focus on your school work first before you can play sports. You need it. You gotta have good grades to play sports," said Tharp.

"Brett will be a completer in animal systems, pine structures and plant systems this year," said agriculture studies teacher Rodney Hardman.

Hardman has been cultivating Brett's inner farmer for four years and trusts him as treasurer of East Hardy's Future Farmers of America chapter.

"I think he's grown and matured since a freshman and really become someone the other kids look up to now and don't mind taking advice from," said Hardman.

"I wanna be a good role model for them so they do the right thing when they get up here and make them wanna strive hard," said Tharp.

Wherever he goes next, Williams believes he's got the recipe for success.

"He's a smart kid and he's got a great work ethic and he really cares a lot about people, so I'm looking forward to watching him grow up even more," said Williams.

Congratulations to East Hardy's Brett Tharp, your student athlete of the week.
