Spotswood girls take home Class 3A state championship in basketball

The Spotswood girls basketball team are now state champions.

Spotswood defeated Hopewell 66-56 to capture the title on Thursday.

At halftime, the game was tied 29-29 in a fast-paced matchup.

Stephanie Ouderkirk had 24 points and 13 rebounds. NaKaila Gray added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Alexis Bennington-Horton ended up with 18 points in the win.


The Spotswood girls basketball team is preparing to play Hopewell in the Class 3A state championship game Thursday afternoon.

The Trailblazers advanced to the state title contest after defeating Lord Botetourt in the state semifinals, 47-42, Tuesday night at Eastern Mennonite University.

Spotswood carries a 27-1 record into the state title game, with the only loss coming to an out-of-state team. Members of the team say chemistry and acceptance of roles is the key to success.

"We're all in this together and that's a true statement this year," said head coach Chris Dodson.

Tip-off of the Class 3A state title game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday at VCU's Siegel Center.
