NEWARK, Del. -- No. 9 seed Hofstra defeated short-handed No. 1 seed James Madison, 57-50, Thursday afternoon in the CAA women's basketball tournament quarterfinal round.
JMU junior guards Kamiah Smalls and Lexie Barrier combined to play just three minutes in the loss due to injury. Smalls was a first-team All-CAA performer during the regular season while averaging 16.6 points per game. Barrier earned second-team All-CAA honors while averaging 11 points per contest.
With Smalls and Barrier limited, the Dukes struggled offensively. JMU shot just 26.9% and made two of 19 three-pointers.
JMU led by ten at halftime but Hofstra outscored the Dukes, 21-6, in the third quarter. James Madison would respond and re-take the lead in the fourth quarter but the Pride was able to pull away down the stretch en route to the upset victory.
The Dukes now wait to learn their postseason fate.
