JMU Women Fall 56-45 At St. Bonaventure As Gwathmey Joins 1,000-Point Club
Despite 22 points by redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmey to join the 1,000-point club, James Madison women’s basketball saw its three-game win-streak snapped at St. Bonaventure in a 56-45 loss to the Bonnies.
JMU (5-2) headed into the third quarter with a 25-24 lead over St. Bonaventure (6-2), and the two teams traded baskets early in the second half before the media timeout. The Bonnies came out firing after the stoppage, taking the lead for good after back-to-back made 3-pointers gave them a five-point advantage at 34-29.
The Dukes held the Bonnies without a made field goal over the final 5:42 of regulation, but eight made SBU free throws kept JMU just out of reach.
St. Bonaventure shot 43.2-percent from the floor (16-37) while JMU shot just 23.6 percent overall (17-72), including a 17.5-percent mark over the final two quarters. Gwathmey was the lone Duke in double figures and used a late 3-pointer to hit 22 points on the night and join the 1,000-point club for her career.
JMU crashed the boards, picking up a 41-40 rebounding advantage with an 18-2 edge on the offensive end.
The road trip continues for the Dukes with a game at Richmond on Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
