JMU women's basketball falls on the road at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – James Madison women’s basketball suffered its first loss of the early season with a 72-65 defeat at Hampton. Devon Merritt and Kamiah Smalls both tallied double-doubles in the contest.

JMU (3-1) opened the game with two quick buckets but Hampton (2-1) quickly jumped in and went on a roll of its own to take the lead. The Dukes trailed 13-9 after one quarter played.

The Dukes then went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter to take a 17-13 lead. JMU continued to roll through the second quarter and led 26-24 at the half. JMU continued its momentum from the second quarter into the third and took a 39-28 lead following a 14-4 run. James Madison did not allow the Lady Pirates to make a second-half field goal until just under five minutes to play in the third frame and saw its largest lead come at the 3:11 mark, with the Dukes up 46-31.

JMU remained in control midway through the final frame, but saw its lead get trimmed, as it led the Lady Pirates 57-56 with 5:34 to play. The Lady Pirates would rattle off 16 points in the final five minutes of play while holding the Dukes to just eight. Hampton outscored the Dukes 31-16 in the final frame to take the 72-65 win.

JMU will host Winthrop at the Convocation Center on Sunday, Nov. 25. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
