WACO, Texas -- James Madison cornerback Jimmy Moreland was named an AFCA First Team All-American on Friday, solidifying his place as a Consensus First Team All-American for the 2018 football season.

Moreland was named First Team All-American by all six major organizations, marking the second straight year a JMU player earned the distinction. Andrew Ankrah was a Consensus First Teamer last season.

The 2018 CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Moreland paced the Colonial Athletic Association with five interceptions while leading the country with three interceptions for a touchdown. The First Team All-CAA selection and Bill Dudley finalist is JMU's all-time leader with 18 career interceptions and has a CAA-record six pick-sixes. Moreland tallied a JMU single-season record 217 interception return yards and also ranked in the top 10 nationally with 15 passes defended.

Starting all 13 games at corner, Moreland registered 56 total tackles to go with 7.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one recovery, 10 pass breakups and a blocked punt. He recorded a season-high 10 tackles with a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss in JMU’s FCS First Round win against Delaware. Moreland record an interception in four straight games during the month of September, highlighted by a program-record 100-yard return for a score at Richmond. He completed his career one pick-six shy of the FCS all-time record and his three this season was just one off the FCS single-season mark.

It’s the third straight season a JMU player has been selected to the AFCA All-America Team and the second straight year a defensive back has been recognized as a First Team honoree (Rashad Robinson).

The Dukes finish the 2018 season with six players receiving All-American accolades, all of whom earned their first career All-America award this season.
