Pride Take Finale Sunday, Duke Take CAA Series

HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) -- James Madison baseball (25-19, 6-9 CAA) fell 10-5 to the Hofstra Pride (13-26, 6-9 CAA) on Sunday in Harrisonburg. The Pride avoided the weekend sweep with the victory and the Dukes held their spot in fifth in the CAA standings after the weekend. Joe Williams was pegged with the loss on Sunday, falling to 1-3 on the season. The Dukes bullpen was able to record another 11 strikeouts to bring their season total to 424.

The Pride opened up the scoring in the first, posting a six spot to take an early lead. JMU responded well in the bottom half, when Kyle Novak opened up the scoring for the Dukes with a double down the line in left. Brady Harju added to the rally, singling through the right side to cut the Pride lead to 6-3. In the second the Dukes would bring the lead down to one, when Novak, once again singled up the middle to score DaVonn Griffin. Matt Dipasupil would single to left later that inning to score Novak and pull the Dukes to within one.

The Pride would extend their lead in the fourth and continue to pull away from the Dukes in the seventh as well. JMU left 14 runners on base in the game, but took the series 2-1 this weekend. The Dukes will host Towson next weekend in another pivotal CAA series. Sunday afternoon JMU will honor their four seniors before the game.

- Joe Williams fell to 1-3 on the season after allowing four runs in the first frame.
- The Dukes sit in fifth place after Sunday's loss to Hofstra and will look to move up the standings again next weekend as they host Towson.
- Next weekend the Dukes will host another crucial series against the Towson Tigers. The Tigers currently sit tied for fifth at 6-9.
- Kyle Novak and Brady Harju led all Dukes with two RBIs a piece on Sunday. The two combined for a 5-for-9 line, with two runs and four RBIs.

Top 1st | JMU 0 – HOFSTRA 6 | Vito Friscia opened the scoring for the Pride in the first with a two-run home run to left center field. Kevin O'Connor doubled to right field to increase the Hofstra lead. Vinnie Costello doubled to left to continue to pile on the runs, while Tyler White homered to right field to make it 6-0.
Bottom 1st | JMU 3 – HOFSTRA 6 | Kyle Novak got the Dukes on the board in the bottom half with a double down the line in left. Brady Harju would single through the right side and the Dukes would cut into the lead.
Bottom 2nd | JMU 5 – HOFSTRA 6 | The Dukes cut the Pride lead to one when Kyle Novak singled up the middle to score DaVonn Griffin. Matt Dipasupil singled to left to score Novak later that inning.
Top 4th | JMU 5 – HOFSTRA 7 | Austin Guathier singled through the right side to tack on another run for Hofstra in the fourth.
Top 7th | JMU 5 – HOFSTRA 10 | Hofstra would add three more in the seventh to double up the Dukes, after a bases loaded walk, a single and a wild pitch.

The Dukes will have the week to prepare for the Towson Tigers this weekend. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Veterans Memorial Park.
