Riverheads hires new head football coach

STAUNTON, Va. -- Thad Wheeler has been hired as the new head football coach at Riverheads High School.

Wheeler joins the Gladiators from Warhill High School in Williamsburg where he led the program to the Class 4A playoffs each of the past four years.

Wheeler has also had coaching stops at George Wythe High School, Lafayette High School, and Virginia High School along with Louisiana Tech University and the College of William & Mary.

He played at the college level for William & Mary where he was a linebacker and long snapper.

Wheeler replaces longtime Riverheads head coach Robert Casto who stepped down the the position earlier this year.

Under Casto's leadership, Riverheads became one of the premier high school football teams in the state of Virginia. The Gladiators won six state titles with Casto at the helm, including the last three Class 1A state championships.

In total, Riverheads posted a 222-59 record over 23 seasons with Casto as head coach.
