Less than two months after being hired to replace Riverheads High School's longtime varsity football coach, Thad Wheeler has resigned.
It was
that Thad Wheeler was taking the helm of Riverheads' state-dominating football team after Coach Robert Casto stepped down after the team's third Class 1A state championship in a row in the fall.
On May 9, the school's athletic director confirmed to WHSV that Wheeler resigned from the position, effective immediately.
Wheeler had previously led Warhill High School in Williamsburg to the Class 4A playoffs from 2015-2018.
Under Casto's leadership, Riverheads posted a 222-59 record over 23 seasons.
It's now unclear who will take charge of coaching one of Virginia's premier high school football teams, with the end of the school year approaching rapidly.
