Riverheads to play for third straight state title

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Riverheads high school football team has a chance to win its third straight state title Saturday afternoon.

The Gladiators are preparing to face Chilhowie in the Class 1A State Championship game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Salem Football Stadium.

The game is a rematch of last season's Class 1A State Championship, a game Riverheads won, 42-0.

"This is the not the same Chilhowie team we played last year," said Riverheads head coach Robert Casto. "They are much improved and things went our way a little bit last year but this is a new year and we are really worried about this year."

The game will also cap off an incredible career for the Riverheads senior class. The group has advanced to the state championship game in each season with the program, winning titles in 2016 and 2017.

"We expect to be here and our kids, we are not starry-eyed," said Casto. "But we are just as excited for this one...this is our seventh state championship appearance."
