Sources: JMU football names new offensive coordinator

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- As the Curt Cignetti era begins for the James Madison University football team, there have been plenty of questions around his start as the head football coach.

Sources say an official announcement will come on Friday.

On Thursday, one of those questions was answered.

Sources confirm to WHSV's Alex Flum that Shane Montgomery will take over as Cignetti's offensive coordinator.

In 2018, he was UNC Charlotte's offensive coordinator. From 2010 to 2017, Montgomery coached at Youngstown State as both a quarterbacks' coach and offensive coordinator. He coached and lost against the Dukes in the 2017 national championship game.

Montgomery has coached at Miami University in Ohio, as well. While at the university, he was the quarterback coach for Ben Roethlisberger who rose to fame with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The new offensive coordinator becomes part of an impressive one-two punch for quarterbacks looking to improve at JMU. While Montgomery brings his experience with Roethlisberger, Cignetti was Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers' quarterback coach at NC State.
