PENN LAIRD, Va. (WHSV) -- One swimmer from Spotswood high school is making waves in the pool.

Senior Evan Weakley won first place at states in Richmond over the weekend in the 50 yard freestyle race. He also placed third in the hundred-yard butterfly. It was an exciting way to cap off his high school swimming career.

"A lot of what I've put in, a lot of hard work, you know high school is kind of where I got started in 8th grade," Weakley said. "I actually got to practice with the high school team and that's where I really figured out that I wanted to take it seriously and take it a step farther, and it was good to close on a good note."

"He's had a tremendous four year career as a varsity swimmer with me and it's been great to coach him," Spotswood swimming head coach Jarad Buckmaster said. "It's been great to get to know him as a kid, you know he's like one of my own children."

Weakley will swim at the college level, next year he will head to the University of Indianapolis.
