Broadway Breakthrough: 'Relief' as Gobblers win first state title (Digital Exclusive)

BROADWAY, Va. (WHSV) -- It still hasn't sunk in completely.

"There would just be times when you just stop and go wow, we're state champions," head coach Bobby Mongold said.

"It was a little surreal in the sense of, there's excitement, there's exhilaration but there's a huge sense of relief as well. After having been there twice and coming up short. You look back and those struggles made us."

To understand how much a state title meant to Broadway, you have to go back to when the Gobblers knocked on the door of state glory twice before.

Nearly a week after winning the ultimate prize in Richmond, Sports Director David DeGuzman sat down with Mongold as well as seniors Ally Repko and Faith Funkhouser to reflect back on their journeys to a state title.

"Broadway Breakthrough" presents a look at how the Gobblers' girls basketball team finally delivered the school's first state championship in their third try in four years.
