Capital Murder Charges Against Teenager

A grand jury in Portsmouth has returned capital murder charges against a 17-year-old high school student accused of fatally stabbing a 16-year-old school acquaintance.

Grand jurors on Thursday added a new charge of attempted rape to elevate an earlier first-degree murder charge against Robert Lee Barnes in the 2008 slaying of Meghan Landowski.

The grand jury also returned counts of abduction and aggravated sexual battery.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office said the new charges were added because of additional DNA evidence.

Landowski was found dead in the family dining room by her stepfather on April 10. Barnes was arrested last October.

No trial date has been set.
