Two major multivehicle accidents closed parts of the Northbound and Southbound sides of Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County Saturday.
The first accident occurred around 12:30 p.m in the southbound lanes near mile marker 275.
The Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue reports the accident involved nearly 30 cars and eight tractor trailers and kept much of the interstate closed for nearly eight hours.
The second accident occurred close to the same time in the northbound lanes near mile marker 281. This multivehicle accident involved about seven cars and three tractor trailers.
In all, seven people were taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. None of the injuries were reported to be life threatening.
The Red Cross opened a shelter at the Mount Jackson Rescue and Fire station, but it was never used.
A Shenandoah County school bus was brought in to provide shelter and warmth for the occupants of the cars that were involved in the wrecks.
There is no word if any charges have been filed in the two accidents.
