UPDATE: Accident Causing Delays on I-81 North Near Mt. Sidney

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- UPDATE 8:24 p.m.: Two people are in the hospital, after Virginia State Police say a U-Haul ran into two different vehicles near mile marker 230 on I-81 in Augusta County.

Troopers are waiting to release the name of the U-Haul driver until family members have been noticed. However, they said the driver has been charged with a DUI and more charges are still pending as they investigate.

Troopers said the wreck occurred at 2:35 p.m. when a U-Haul struck a Camry first, and then a pick-up truck. Troopers say the impact flipped the truck over, trapping a woman inside. The woman, Patricia Schimmel, was airlifted to UVA Medical Center. Her husband, George Schimmel, was also in the truck and was treated at Augusta Health. He has since been released.

The driver of the U-Haul was sent to Augusta Health and then airlifted to UVA Medical Center at about 3:30 p.m.. According to state police, he is in serious but stable condition.

UPDATE at 6:08 p.m.: The accident has now been cleared and traffic along I-81 N at mile marker 231 is moving along.

Emergency crews are responding to an accident on I-81 northbound near mile marker 230 in Augusta County. This is near the rest stop near Mt. Sidney.

Dispatchers confirm a helicopter has been called to the scene of the accident.

According to VDOT, motorists can expect major delays due to a vehicle accident. The north left shoulder, left lane, right lane, and right shoulder are closed. Traffic backups are approximately three miles.
