Harrisonburg Police Catch Man After Gas Station Robbery

A man is in custody after robbing an Exxon station and assaulting a station clerk in Harrisonburg.

The Harrisonburg Police Department says the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. Monday on Reservoir Street.

The suspect, 33-year-old Gregory Maradeo, took the gas station cash register and ran away.

Police say he had a metal rod in his possession at the time.

Police set up a perimeter and spotted Maradeo crossing the Costco parking lot.

He was caught as he was running through the bushes from Costco into the Shenandoah Eye Care parking lot.

Maradeo is charged with robbery, wearing a mask in a public place and attempting to escape custody.

Witnesses say they were shocked to see all of the police cars in the area and were confused as to what was going on.

"He was on the ground with handcuffs. He had nothing but blue shorts on and he was babbling incoherently and kept sitting up, and the police kept pushing him back down to the ground," says Lydia Cunningham, who witnessed the arrest.

Maradeo is in custody, and the cash register and money were recovered.

The gas station clerk's injuries are non-life threatening.
