Low Voter Turnout Leads to Bill

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY -- Low voter turnout during the Democratic Primary has some thinking about scaling things back in the future.
Rockingham County is proposing a bill to consolidate precincts, which could reduce the amount of staff at each poll on election days.

County registrar Doug Geib says election officers are paid $155 for the day and there are no less than three election officers at each polling site.

"We're hoping to get some support for that this coming year, so that we can cut costs by consolidating precincts when we know we're going to have a low turnout and I think that would be a smart way to save taxpayer dollars," said Geib.

Geib says he proposed a similar bill last year, but it was denied.
