Shenandoah County Launches Prescription Drug Drop-off Program

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A new program in Shenandoah County will let you drop off unwanted medication at no cost 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office was chosen through a grant to receive one of 1,000 prescription drug disposal units from CVS Pharmacy.

The disposal bin is in the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office in Woodstock.

Sgt. Rebecca Mauck checks the bin and said people can drop off unwanted medication anonymously at any time.

"Currently prescription medication abuse is one of the highest accidental rates of overdose in the nation. So it will give them an easy way to dispose of those medications that they no longer want," said Mauck.

The Harrisonburg Police Department also has a similar program, which it said has been hugely successful.
