VA Man Wins Multimillion Award in Lawsuit Against Exxon

A Newport News jury has awarded a former shipyard employee $25 million in his lawsuit against Exxon for asbestos-related medical problems.

The verdict was one of the largest jury verdicts ever handed down in Virginia.

The Circuit Court jury began deliberating Wednesday and reached the verdict Thursday after a two-week trial.

The Daily Press reports that 72-year-old Bert Minton of Carolton worked on 17 Exxon commercial oil tankers as a shipfitter and then a repair supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding in the 1960s and '70s.

He contracted mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer that doctors said resulted from his exposure while working at the shipyard.
