Four-Vehicle Wreck on 42 Worst Ever Seen in Dayton

A multi-vehicle crash backed up traffic for several miles on a road in Rockingham County Tuesday afternoon.

The crash involved four vehicles including a tractor-trailer. Dayton Police Chief Donnie Conley says it's the worst crash ever seen in the town.

It happened shortly after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Huffman Drive and Route 42 in Dayton.

Two people were transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital and one was sent to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The tractor trailer driver was traveling north on 42 at the time of the crash. For unknown reasons, he crossed the median and into southbound lanes, hitting the green SUV. The SUV then spun into a car.

The tractor trailer hit another car before crashing into a fence.

Despite the injuries and traffic, Conley says the situation was handled rapidly.

"We had some fuel spills, a little bit of diesel, but everything was contained very rapidly so none of that is a concern right now," says Conley. "All of that was contained very quickly upon arrival to the scene."

The tractor-trailer driver has been charged with reckless driving. The names of those injured have not yet been released.
