Ice is just one of the challenges road crews face Thursday night.
Harrisonburg's Public Works Department will run in 12-hour shifts to handle whatever the winter storm may bring. Workers will stay on the roads until the storm ends.
Early on, they'll check bridges and overpasses to try to keep them from being coated in ice.
For snow plow drivers, a big obstacle is other drivers on the roads when it's not safe.
"It takes us longer to do our job. It's dangerous for the people out on the streets, as well as it is for us. But, you know, you work around that and continue working the streets. Hopefully, everything turns out OK," says Gonzalo Vieta, a Public Works driver.
Depending on how bad the storm is, crews may work through Friday night to clear the roads.
