Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in Augusta County, but Augusta Health is trying to change that.
The hospital hired three new cardiologists and their presence means Augusta County heart attack patients can be taken to Augusta Health, instead of hospitals in Harrisonburg or Charlottesville.
That will save emergency responders time, and Dr. Morton Kalus says that will save lives.
"Heart muscle will continue to die. As time goes on that heart muscle will become scarring and will never ever recover, so the quicker you are able to open that artery the better. Literally time is muscle," says Kalus.
Augusta Health is planning to meet with emergency responders in the next couple weeks to let them know the new cardiology lab is available for patients
