First African American Bishop for the Area

The first African American to take on the status of bishop in the Staunton and Waynesboro area was consecrated at a ceremony Saturday.

Bishop Theodore Payne is the pastor at Oak Grove Baptist Restoration Ministries in Waynesboro.

He says it took a lot of time and studying on his part to achieve this honor.

Payne will now have more responsibilities in the area and may also have the opportunity to do some work in Africa.

"It's actually history, history in the making today. And for this to take place, it's not heard of among us around here that much at all, so it's just an excellent time," says Payne.

About 500 people attended the ceremony and dinner in Payne's honor.
