WAYNESBORO, Va. -- At about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, police made an unusual DUI arrest in the parking lot of Plaza Azteca, 23 Windigrove Dr.

A witness called 911 to report that Efrain Moreno Alvarez, 40, had struck a guardrail on Interstate 64.

Alvarez left the scene to continue driving erratically into the city and the witness followed Alvarez into the Plaza Azteca lot. That was where an officer stopped Alvarez.

When the officer approached Alvarez, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol and skunk coming from Alvarez.

The officer also noticed a plastic grocery bag hanging from the rear windshield wiper. The wiper was moving, even though it was not raining.

After having Alvarez perform field sobriety tests, the officer arrested him for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The officer asked about the grocery bag, and Alvarez told him it was a skunk that he had killed. Alvarez told the officer he was trying to find a place to dispose of the skunk carcass when he was stopped.

Alvarez had a blood alcohol content of .15 and he was transported to Middle River Regional Jail.
