A program called Safe Routes to School is seeking a grant for $100,000. The Harrisonburg City Council voted to support the request for the grant.

The program promotes safe walking and biking to school. Students are also taught riding and walking safety. Seven schools in Harrisonburg, kindergarten through eighth grade, participate in the program. It is all about health and safety.

"And it's fun, to walk to school with friends, just like many of the parents and grandparents of done when they went to school, walking to school was part of the educational experience," said Nathan Barge, the Coordinator for Safe Routes to School of Harrisonburg.

The grant money from the Virginia Department of Transportation, would be used to further biking safety instruction.
