ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- Wildfire season begins in Virginia today.
Wildfires can devastate entire regions, and being in such a heavily forested area, people around the community need to pay attention.
The large majority of wildfires in Virginia are caused by human involvement.
Firefighters want to remind people that to have an open burn in Rockingham County you have to have a burn permit.
Joe Mullens, Captain Assistant Fire Marshall at Rockingham County Fire and Rescue said it takes just a few steps to make a big difference.
"Being cautious, good common sense, and knowing what they're doing knowing; that their actions are the result of the majority of fires in Virginia, and using good safe best practices," said Mullens.
Wildfire season is from Oct. 15 to Nov. 30.
