At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 6, members of the West Virginia State Police Detachment in Ripley, Jackson County, investigated a two vehicle crash on I-77 just north of the Ripley interstate interchange.

A maroon Mercury Mountaineer was traveling north when the driver lost control on the wet pavement and veered into the median. The Mountaineer then crashed through the cable median and into the southbound lanes of traffic. A GMC truck traveling south on I-77 struck the Mountaineer broadside causing the Mountaineer to catch fire.

As a result of the crash, five of the six persons in the Mountaineer were killed. The sixth person, along with the driver of the GMC truck, was transported to CAMC with non-life threatening injuries. The victims of the crash are:

-Vivian Easton, 46, of Charleston

-Devon Easton Badger, 15, of Charleston

-Walter Taylor, 48, of Charleston

-Tahj Claiborne, 14, of Charleston

-Wallace Worrell, 50, of Charleston

It is believed that weather played a contributing factor in the crash.

TFC M. P Fannin of the Ripley Detachment of the West Virginia State Police is investigating the crash.
