ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - A fire broke out at the site of new townhomes under construction off Boyers Road in Rockingham County on Saturday morning.

Fire officials responded and arrived at the fire at Locust Grove Village on Saturday around 6 a.m.

Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Captain Todd Spitzer said the fire was controlled around 7 a.m. and confirmed that no injuries occurred.

Spitzer said the cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation. He said they have not found any electrical issues that would have caused the fire.

The building that was still under construction was left in ashes, with nearby cars and structures damaged. Temperatures from the blaze affected the homes across the parking lot, leaving the siding melted.

“I looked out my window, which is right back there, and I could just hear the fire burning. I looked out and could just see a fireball,” Brett Beecham, a resident in the neighborhood said. “I was standing in our living room, watching, and you could just feel the heat. It was radiating.”

As many of the nearby residents woke up to see the fire across from them, they were grateful that no one was injured.

“I saw the car that was on fire, and obviously, walking out of it is insane to look at. Honestly, I am just glad we are OK, because this is significant damage,” neighbor David Hulvey said.
