EMU students celebrate bright Easter culture with "alfombra"

Latino students at Eastern Mennonite University are celebrating their culture ahead of this Easter Sunday, while also adding some color to their campus and the Harrisonburg community.

The Latino Student Alliance has created an "alfombra" or carpet made from dyed sawdust, rice and flour. None of the materials are glued down and these art pieces line the streets in certain countries to mark the processional route for Good Friday.

The Latino Alliance students tell me they wanted to show the campus and community a different side of Easter.

"The Latino culture sticks more to the religious piece and all of that and then the American culture you know, brings the Easter bunny and the Easter eggs and all that so I think this brings a different colorful piece to it," said Paola Diaz, an EMU senior.

The students have worked on this project for the past two weeks and will present the alfombra at a chapel service.
