Staunton man pleads guilty to assaulting an inmate at Middle River Regional Jail
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - Caleb McCauley pleaded guilty in Augusta County Circuit Court to one count of malicious wounding after video evidence revealed him assaulting an elderly inmate at Middle River Regional Jail.
McCauley was held at MRRJ for an assault against a law enforcement officer charge he had received. During his time at MRRJ — specifically on April 7, 2023 — McCauley attacked an inmate with several sexual assault crimes to his name. In court records, a forensic psychologist claimed the victim had made contact with McCauley when he was younger, and one of the charges the victim was charged with affected his friend.
The victim in this case was taken to UVA Medical Center to treat his injuries. According to court documents, photos of the attack depicted multiple gashes in the victim’s face. The Augusta County Commonwealth’s Attorney said he survived the attack but sustained long-lasting injuries.
McCauley was sentenced to 10 years in prison with six years suspended.
