Fatal Crash on I-81 South near Winchester

UPDATE 3:46 p.m.

Virginia State Police says one person has died in the crash.

Police believe one vehicle was driving northbound on I-81 when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail. The car went across the northbound lanes and then through the median. It then struck two vehicles traveling southbound.

Virginia State Police is investigating the crash and is being helped by the crash reconstruction team and the Frederick County Sheriff's Department.

VDOT reports that the roadway has reopened.

Virginia State Police reports the crash happened at 12:34 this afternoon. Two people are seriously injured.

Virginia Department of Transportation expects southbound on I-81 to be closed for at least another hour. Traffic is backed up eight miles.

V-DOT has established a detour using exit 317.

Virginia Department of Transportation is reporting major delays on I-81 South at mile marker 313.9 near Winchester in Frederick County.

Both the right and left lanes are closed after a multi-vehicle accident. Traffic backups are approximately 7.0 miles.
