HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - June 18 voters headed to the polls to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary.

On the Republican ballot, voters choose between 5 candidates, the elected nominee will go up against Tim Kaine in November. On the Democratic ballot, voters were able to choose three candidates for the city council race.

Harrisonburg Director of Elections and General Registrar Mark Finks said voter turnout has been low statewide, based on what he heard from other localities. Every presidential year, there are two primaries in Virginia. Finks said sometimes voters can forget there is a second primary after Super Tuesday.

“They cannot vote in both elections,” said Finks.

A good number of registered voters in Harrisonburg are college students, said Finks.

”The students that are registered to vote here are out of time so that also brings the numbers down as far as total turnout for the city,” said Finks.

Polls closed at 7:00pm and Finks said the first round of results could be out by 7:30pm. Any results posted the night of will be unofficial. Finks said the election will be certified on June 24.
