WINCHESTER, Va. (WHSV) - DeShon Foxx is embracing the challenge of leading a university’s athletic department.

Foxx was hired as Shenandoah University’s seventh athletic director on June 21.

Winchester isn’t unfamiliar territory for Foxx. He joined Shenandoah in 2021 as the first-ever Assistant Athletic Director for student success, inclusion, and equity. In 2022, Foxx began serving as the Assistant Vice President for Advancement.

A Lynchburg native and Brookville High grad, Foxx played college football at UConn and even had an NFL stint with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets. Pursuing a career in college administration is something he started thinking about in college. Foxx credits former UConn and current Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel for inspiring him to work in college athletics.

Foxx believes his experience as an athlete will help him in his role as athletic director.

“I’ve had so many people along my journey who’s helped me get to where I’ve been able to get to. I want to do that,” said Foxx. “I want to give back. I feel like I owe almost a debt of service to those who are coming after me.”

Foxx says his focus in the short term is continuing to build a strong culture within the University. He adds that long term goals include competing for championships.

Foxx officially begins his new role on July 29.
