Page County gas prices lowest in Virginia, so far
PAGE COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — Gas prices have remained relatively steady across the Shenandoah Valley, but Page County stands out for a very different reason — it currently boasts the lowest gas prices in Virginia.
As of Thursday, several stations in Page County were offering regular unleaded at prices far below the state average at $3, as low as $2.48. Those numbers are significantly cheaper than those in the surrounding areas. According to AAA, Page County’s average sits at $2.69 per gallon, while Augusta County averages $3.02 and Rockingham County comes in at $2.95.
Experts say the unusually low prices may be the result of local market factors.
“Sometimes you’ll see what we call a ‘gas war,’” said Morgan Dean, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic region. “When one station drops its price, others nearby follow to stay competitive. That can drive prices down across an entire area.”
Dean added that other factors, like whether a station is independently owned, whether the property is leased or owned, or how much revenue comes from in-store purchases, can all influence how low a gas station is willing to price fuel.
Though gas prices typically begin rising this time of year with the start of summer travel, the trend hasn’t taken off in 2025 — at least not yet, Dean said. Crude oil prices have dropped to around $62-$63 per barrel, down from over $80 per barrel in January. That decrease has helped keep prices from rising ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
In the Harrisonburg metro area, gas prices have ticked up only slightly, currently averaging $3.03, up one cent from last week, but still down a few cents from last month. Still, while Page County residents are benefiting from the dip, Dean cautions against driving long distances just to cash in.
